Every Day Counts (Literally)Here's something a lot of Set PAs figure out way too late. Those long days, the early call times, the endless walkie chatter... they're days. And days are currency in this industry, especially if you want to end up in the AD department. The DGA doesn't hand out 2nd AD membership because someone's talented or well liked. It's earned through documented, verifiable work days. 600 of them if you're building your case from outside the studio zone. A "day" is exactly that: one call sheet, one pay stub, one date. No hour minimums, no shortcuts. So if you keep your paperwork straight now, you walk into that DGA interview with a stack of proof instead of a panic. So here's what we'd do, starting now: - Save every call sheet, production report, and crew list. Every single one. Digital folder, physical binder, we don't care. Just don't lose them.
- Save every pay stub and deal memo. Highlight your name and position on both. It takes ten seconds and saves you weeks later.
- Stay in your lane on purpose. Sticking with Set PA work rather than bouncing between PA types keeps your paper trail clean and shows a clear route into the AD department.
- Learn the department while you're in it. Watch how your 2nd AD builds the PR. Ask about background management, cast movement, walkie protocol. Treat it as an apprenticeship, because that's what it is.
- Track your days like a budget. Know your number. It makes the long haul feel like progress instead of a treadmill.
Nobody becomes a 2nd AD in the DGA by accident. There are real requirements to hit, but do the above and you're building the case day by day. Those days clearing background and holding traffic count toward something. Keep the paperwork.
We hope you all enjoyed last night's workshop; a big thank you to Patrick Priest! The feedback was fantastic!
This was from Lou C:
"It was an incredible workshop. Patrick went above and beyond and gave everyone a master class on the world of the AD Dept, the DGA trainee program, the importance of prep, and much more.
I was incredibly impressed with the session and very proud of how well it came together. Patrick brought a wealth of knowledge and real-world experience to the table, I walked away with a ton of valuable information!"
