Mastering the Entry-Level ResumeA production office gets hundreds of resumes for one PA slot. The person opening yours is a coordinator with a phone wedged to their ear and 200 other emails open. Careers in Film puts it plainly from the hiring side: staffers rarely have time to do more than skim, and what they're scanning for is "relevant skills, films I recognize or people I have worked with." That one line should change how you build the whole document. Use credit blocks, not corporate bulletsIATSE Local 856's resume guide lays out exactly what belongs in each production credit: name of production, type of production, year it was shot, your position, the Key or Head of Department you worked under, and the production company or studio. Contact block at the top — name, phone, email, city, plus a website or LinkedIn if you have one. That Key/HOD field is the one almost nobody includes. It's also the exact thing a coordinator is looking for. If they recognize the name of your 1st AD, you've just skipped a step. 856 says keep it to two pages max. TealHQ says one page when you're starting out. Both are right: one page now, two when your credits actually earn it. Wrapbook adds a useful filter — only include credits relevant to the job you're applying for. Don't oversell, and don't make demandsKen Aguado, writing from the perspective of someone who hires PAs, is blunt about this. A paragraph about the student films you directed or shot isn't needed. Ironically, saying you worked as a PA on student films may carry more weight. Keep any accomplishment to one sentence. And skip the objective line that makes a demand. "Seeking PA work on a camera crew" reads as a condition, not availability. Aguado also notes PAs get hired on recommendations from other PAs, and the bar is simple: would they want you next to them for a 14-hour day? Ignore the advice that assumes you already have creditsIndeed suggests dropping non-film jobs. Don't — not yet. Wrapbook and Aguado both say non-film work stays if it shows something transferable: stamina, teamwork, driving, dealing with people. Indeed is right about cutting personal details though: marital status, political views, Social Security number, none of it belongs. Also, all that "beat the ATS" keyword advice? It comes from corporate hiring data. Jobscan found ATS at 492 of the Fortune 500. Your PDF to a Production Coordinator is being read by a human. Do this todayRewrite your credits into blocks with all six fields. Add the Key or HOD name to every one. Cut every sentence longer than a sentence. Put your reel link near the top, save as PDF, and send it.
