The Art Department PAHere's something we run into a lot: someone tells you what an Art Department PA gets paid, or how many days you need before you can join a union, and they're repeating a number they heard on set in 2019. Rates and union rules change with every bargaining cycle. If you quote a stale figure in an interview, or chase the wrong local, that's on nobody but the person who told you. So today, instead of handing you numbers we can't stand behind, here's how to find the real ones — and what actually matters about this job. Know what the role actually isAn Art Department PA is not a set PA. Different bosses, different day. You're working to the Art Director, the Set Decorator and ultimately the Production Designer. Before you apply anywhere, get clear on that hierarchy and where you'd sit in it. Interviewers can tell in about thirty seconds whether you know who you'd be reporting to. Verify money at the sourcePay varies by market, by budget tier, and by whether the show is union or non-union. Aggregator sites and Reddit threads go out of date fast. Go to the current agreements themselves. If you can't find a rate you can point to with a date on it, treat whatever you've heard as a rumor and ask the person hiring you directly. Union pathway: check primary documents onlyThis is the area most stuffed with outdated folk wisdom. Whether art department days count toward eligibility, how the roster and hours mechanics work — all of that lives in actual union documentation, not in a friend's memory. Start with the Art Directors Guild (IATSE Local 800) and IATSE and read what they publish themselves. What actually gets you staffedNot a reel. Practical stuff: can you drive, can you source an obscure prop, can you handle returns without losing receipts, do you have set etiquette. Basic drafting or design software helps. And know where the role leads — Art Department Coordinator, Set Dresser, Buyer, Assistant Art Director — so you can say out loud why you want this department and not just "a job in film." Do this todayPick one production you'd want to work on. Find out who the Production Designer is. Then check a union source, dated, for anything you think you know about rates. If you can't date it, don't repeat it. Today's New Jobs272 jobs sitting on the US board this morning, 29 of them added in the last day, and the new ones are still fairly untouched if you get in early. Recommended Job of the DayProduction Assistant Internship is our pick today. It's with an independent film company in Los Angeles with over 15 years of developing, producing and distributing features, and you'd be keeping the office moving: research, summaries, scripts, schedules, trackers, meetings and admin. It's hybrid, so part of it can be done from home. Suits anyone who wants to watch an indie feature travel from idea to release. Best thing you can do is show you're organised in writing — a short, tidy, error-free note goes further here than enthusiasm. Send it today, because whoever reads first gets shortlisted first.
Assistant to Director of Animation sits at a long-established talent agency in New York. Entry level, so you'll learn on the job, but they want initiative and real interest in animation, games, scripted podcasts and audiobooks. If becoming an agent is the plan, say so plainly. Waiting a few days on this one just means joining a longer pile. Film Editing & Marketing Internship is paid work in New York with a global streaming service, production company and distributor. You'd be cutting branded clips and trailers for social, helping with assets, trends and reporting, and covering screenings around the city.
