Every week someone in the group asks the same thing: can I get my first film or TV job remotely? Short answer, usually no. Slightly longer answer, it depends entirely on which department you're aiming at. Today's piece is what we know from working in this business and from watching what actually lands our members jobs. Remote-friendly is a department questionPhysical production is not remote. Locations, ADs, camera, grip, art, costume, catering — the whole set operation happens in a room with people in it. That's most first jobs. The remote and hybrid work tends to sit elsewhere: post and editorial, VFX coordination, development and script reading, marketing, distribution, some producer and executive support. Notice what those have in common. They're the roles where the work is a file and a phone call, not a truck and a call sheet. The catch nobody mentionsEven in those departments, remote skews senior. Studios hand remote setups to people they already trust with unreleased footage. A first-jobber with no track record is a security question, and plenty of companies just say no rather than answer it. That's not a judgment on you. It's an NDA problem. The other catch is quieter. Most first jobs still come from someone who worked next to you and liked how you handled a bad day. Remote makes that harder. You can build a reputation from your apartment, but it takes longer and you have to be deliberate about it. What to actually doPick the department first, then ask about remote — not the other way around. If you want post or development, remote and hybrid are genuinely on the table, and yes, that widens things beyond LA, New York and Atlanta. If you want set, plan to be where the set is.
