AI's Growing Role in Film and TV Production
Here's the thing nobody says out loud when they tell you to "get on set and learn": the tasks that used to be handed to the new person are the exact tasks software is now doing. Not all of them. But enough that it's worth knowing which ones before you spend six months chasing the wrong entry point.
The rung that's actually being automated is logging
ProductionHub's breakdown of AI in film production found that most on-set AI is still assistive — smart camera systems, virtual production, continuity help. The one workflow they describe as genuinely transformed is rush logging: reviewing and tagging hours of footage after the shoot. That's classic post PA and junior assistant editor work.
So don't pretend it isn't happening. Learn the logging tools, then sell yourself on the part the software can't do — checking its work, catching what it mislabeled, knowing what the editor actually needs at 11pm. Operate the tool, own the judgment.
Set work is the safer starting point right now
Set PA, ADs, grip and electric, art department, locations. Physical presence, coordination, dealing with people. The CVL Economics study commissioned by the Concept Art Association and the Animation Guild, reported by The Hollywood Reporter, found generative AI could consolidate or replace work equivalent to 21.4% of the film, TV and animation workforce — with VFX, post, sound, voice work, concept art and entry-level roles named as most exposed. Rotoscoping and compositing were a real ladder into VFX. They're a shakier one now.
Know the paperwork. Seriously.
This is the sleeper skill. Under the SAG-AFTRA Commercials Contract effective April 1, 2025, producers need "clear and conspicuous" consent from performers for digital replicas, based on a reasonably specific description of the intended use, via a Digital Replica Rider or separate signed writing. And SAG-AFTRA members ratified the 2026 TV/Theatrical agreement on June 4, 2026 by 91.42%, adding further restrictions on synthetic performers — per SAG-AFTRA.
A production assistant who knows what a Digital Replica Rider is stands out. Most don't.
What to do this week
Pick one AI tool used in your target department — a logging or metadata tool if you're aiming at post — and get genuinely competent with it. Read the SAG-AFTRA AI resources page so you can talk about consent rules without bluffing. And if you're weighing set versus post for your first paid gig, set is the steadier bet this year.
