I Need Experience to Get ExperienceI hear this one constantly. You can't get hired without credits, and you can't get credits without being hired. It feels like a locked door with no handle. It isn't. You're just defining "experience" way too narrowly. Here's what's actually happening on my end. When I'm filling entry-level PA slots, I am not scanning your resume for a studio feature. I'm looking for one thing: has this person been on a set before, and did they survive it? That's it. I want to know you understand a call time is not a suggestion, that you don't walk through frame, and that when someone hands you a radio you know to listen before you talk. You do not need a Marvel show to prove that. All of this counts: - Your friend's content creator video
- A student thesis film
- A local car dealership spot
- A music video shot in somebody's garage
- A livestreamed church service
- The unpaid short someone posted about in a Facebook group
If there was a camera, a call sheet (or even just a group text with a start time), and someone calling the shots, you were on a set. Put it on your resume. Now, put it on there honestly. Don't inflate a two-day student short into "Production Assistant, Feature Film." List the project title, the format, your actual role, and the director or producer you worked for. Real credits with real references beat padded ones every time, and this town is small enough that I will find out. What those small jobs actually give you is bigger than a line on a page. You learn set language. You learn where to stand. You build a reference who will pick up the phone when I call. Half the crew I hire came to me through somebody vouching for them, and those relationships almost never start on a big show. They start on the tiny ones nobody was paying attention to. So stop waiting for permission. Find one project this month, even if it's someone's passion piece shooting on a weekend. Show up early, work hard, and be the person everyone wants back. That's how the door opens. Not because someone finally let you in, but because you kept showing up until you were already inside. Have questions or want to chat about your next steps? We're always just an email away. All the Best, Liv olivia@myfirstjobinfilm.com
Today's New Jobs
195 roles live on the board right now, 25 of them fresh since yesterday, and the new ones are always the quietest end of the pile — worth a look before everyone else gets there.
Recommended Job of the Day
Office Manager/Assistant is our pick this morning. It's with a major global production company behind large-scale film and TV, based in Los Angeles, full-time and on-site: running the office day to day, second assistant to the CEO, dealing with internal teams and outside suppliers, phones, email, supplies, kit and a bit of personal assistant work on top. Good fit if you're the organised one who notices things before they become problems. Before you send anything, tighten your CV so the admin and organisational stuff sits at the top rather than buried under set credits. Do it today — desks like this get read as applications land, and shortlists form fast.
Others of note...
Assistant sits with a film production and global sales company in Burbank, supporting the CEO and a senior creative executive plus general admin across the business. Busy desk, high-profile, and a rare view of how films get developed, financed and sold abroad. They want someone who reads and watches constantly. Applications get sifted as they come in, so don't sit on it.
Post Production Assistant is a genuine entry-level post job with a Los Angeles creative agency and post house: ingesting and exporting media, keeping files named and organised, transcribing, logging deliveries, plus light Premiere work alongside assistant editors. Regular weekday hours. If post is where you're heading, this is the kind of first rung that actually leads somewhere — get your name in early.
Film and TV Production Internships come from an award-winning independent filmmaker's company in New York. Three months, 10-14 hours a week, hybrid, unpaid with a $100 stipend at the end. You'd build pitch decks, write coverage, research and shadow producers and directors. Worth being honest with yourself about the money — but the access is real, and they'll be reading as people apply.
