The History of the PA Role and How It's Changed
The PA job is still the way most of us got in. The title hasn't changed. The job absolutely has.
Back in the old studio system there wasn't really a "PA" job title at all. You got hired as a messenger, an office assistant, a general dogsbody. You delivered scripts, hauled gear, ran errands, and you learned by watching the people around you who actually knew what they were doing. Same as now, honestly. No textbook gives you that.
Then productions got bigger and the PA became part of the crew structure properly. Set PAs backing up the ADs, wrangling background, handing out paperwork, holding lockups, keeping information moving. Office PAs on schedules, production reports, travel, supplies, and being the link between departments.
The basics are the same. Show up, pay attention, be useful. What's changed is the tech and the speed.
You're now dealing with digital call sheets, cloud production platforms, group chats, electronic paperwork and a schedule that changes three times before lunch. The job that used to mean walking an envelope across the lot now means organizing files, updating a database, or getting urgent info to five people on four different apps. Everything moves faster. Being able to roll with it matters more than it used to.
It's also split out more. Alongside Set and Office PAs you'll see Art Department PAs, Locations PAs, Post Production PAs, Writers' PAs, Sustainability PAs. Good news for you guys, because you can get experience in the exact department you're aiming at.
What hasn't changed is why it's worth doing. Nothing else shows you how a production actually runs, gets you contacts, and helps you work out where you fit.
Yes, you'll still get sent for coffee. You'll also be the person keeping information moving and solving problems nobody warned you about. That's the job.
Got questions about these opportunities, or just want to talk through where you're headed? We'd love to hear from you — that's literally why we're here.
All the Best,
